Music

Music at St. Thomas’s is a varied and integral part of parish life and worship. The 10 AM service features the organ and choir led by Dianne Adams McDowell. The choir is open to all, and rehearsals are held Sundays at 9:00 AM in the church, September through early June.

Special service music, including a gospel for Trinity Sunday and jazz for All Saints' Day, are composed by Dianne and her husband and collaborator, James McDowell. These services are an annual tradition and feature guest musicians.

Various parishioners have added instrumental accents to hymns, anthems, and service music over the years, with violins, recorders, flutes, and cellos.

During the summer we feature a range of musicians, including high school students and adults with more flexible summer schedules.

Original compositions by the McDowells, including a Jazz Eucharist, Gospel and contemporary Masses, and choral anthems, have been commissioned through various sources -- St. Thomas’ Music Development Fund, Yale Institute of Sacred Music, the Church of Saint Paul and the Redeemer, Chicago, as well as parishioners and individual gifts to St. Thomas' music program.
